Recycling Clay

How to Recycle Clay: Step-by-Step Guide

Recycling clay is an essential skill for pottery enthusiasts looking to reduce waste and save on materials. With just a few simple tools and a little time, you can efficiently recycle your clay scraps into usable material. Follow this guide for an easy method to recycle clay at home or in your studio.

Materials Needed to Recycle Clay

To get started, gather the following tools and materials:

  • Two 5-Gallon Buckets
  • Cheap Pillowcase (for use as a liner)
  • Drill
  • Drill Bit (1/2″ size works best)
  • Rolling Cart for 5-Gallon Bucket (optional, but useful for mobility)

Step-by-Step Process for Recycling Clay

  1. Prepare the Buckets
Take both 5-gallon buckets and snap on their lids to prepare them for the process.
  2. Drill Holes in the First Bucket
Select one of the buckets and drill holes in the bottom and lid using the 1/2″ drill bit.
    • Drill around the edge and across the middle of both the bottom and lid.
    • Be careful not to drill too many holes, as this could weaken the structural integrity of the bucket.
  3. Swap the Lids
Switch the lid of the bucket with holes with the untouched bucket. This setup will allow moisture to drain as your clay dries.
  4. Stack the Buckets
Place the bucket with holes in the bottom on top of the bucket with holes in the lid. This creates a draining system for the clay.
  5. Line the Top Bucket with a Pillowcase
Remove the lid from the top bucket and insert the pillowcase inside as a liner. The pillowcase will hold the clay slip and help filter out excess moisture.
  6. Fill the Pillowcase with Slip
Pour your clay slip (a mixture of clay and water) into the pillowcase inside the bucket. The slip will start to dry as the moisture drains into the bottom bucket.
  7. Snap the Lid Back On
Secure the lid back onto the top bucket. Let the clay dry for a few days or until it reaches a manageable consistency.
  8. Let as much water drain as you can
  9. Lift the pillowcase out and transfer to a plaster slab

Optional: Use a Rolling Cart

If you need to move the buckets around your studio, consider placing them on a rolling cart for easy mobility. This is especially useful if you’re recycling larger amounts of clay.

Conclusion

Recycling clay is an eco-friendly way to reuse your pottery scraps and reduce waste in your studio. By following these simple steps, you can turn your clay slip back into usable material for your projects. Plus, with minimal equipment required, it’s an easy process that anyone can do!
