Why do we use cottle boards

We use cottle boards for mold making and slip casting. If you have a model that you would like to make into a mold you need to have a “box” surrounding your model that you can pour the plaster into. Here is how to make cottle boards.

Making Cottle Boards

  • Clamps
  • Four 6″ 1 1/2-2′ long by 6” or 10” high good quality plywood like oak laminated or birch
  • Four 2 by 2-inch stock
  • Wood Glue
  • 4 clamps
  • Drill
  1. Glue and Drill each of the stocks to one end of each of the 4 plywood boards making sure that it is true and flush on the edges of each piece of plywood
  2. Clamp the stocks flush to the edge of the board so that it is completely flat
  3. After it dries drill a few nails into it
