How to make a plaster drying board

Materials

  1. Plastic bin
  2. Water
  3. No. 1 Pottery Plaster
  4. Mask/Respirator
  5. Murphy’s Oil Soap
  6. Scale
  7. 2 plastic pails Flexible plastic containers
  8. Ruler
  9. Permanent Marker
  10. Isopropyl alcohol
  11. Spray Top
  12. Spatula
  13. cordless drill
  14. Mixing attachment
  15. Gloves
  16. Timer
  17. Metal Rib
  18. Sureform

Steps

  1. Measure the length and width of your plastic bin
  2. Mark 1 1/2 inch above the bottom
  3. Mix 1:1 Murphy’s Oil Soap and Water
  4. Add 2 coats of Murphy’s Oil Soap solution to the bin
  5. input the dimensions into this plaster calculator
  6. Weigh out the plaster and water into separate containers
  7. Use your fingers to sift the plaster into the water container
    • MAKE SURE you SIFT the PLASTER INTO the WATER
  8. Let it slake (sit) for 5 minutes
  9. Mix the plaster
    • Use the cordless drill and mixing attachment and mix for 1 minute
    • Alternatively you can use a spatula and mix the plaster for 5 minutes
    • DON’T MIX TOO AGGRESSIVELY as you DON’T WANT to introduce air bubbles
  10. Spritz the rubbing alcohol on the top of the plaster and the bubbles should pop
    • Don’t use too much rubbing alcohol
  11. Slowly pour the plaster into the bin up to the line marked, making sure to our onto one wall of the bin so that the plaster doesn’t form any air pockets
  12. Gently tap the bin several times to make sure that all the air bubbles have popped or come to the surface
  13. Spritz the rubbing alcohol one more time
  14. Let the plaster cure for half an hour
  15. Pop the plaster out of the bin
  16. Clean up the plaster if you need to using a metal rib or sure form

Clean up

  1. Let the plaster set inside the pail.
  2. Once completely dry start to crack the plaster by flexing the plaster.
  3. Throw the plaster into the trash DO NOT POUR it DOWN the DRAIN!!!
