Joining slip is an essential part of hand building. It ensures that your joins are nice and secure. Use joining slip when your two pieces are leather hard to make a firm connection.
The three liquids you can add to make your joining slip are straight water, magic water, and vinegar. Vinegar is a deflocculant and will make your clay more
Materials
- Clay body/trimming scraps
3. 2 yogurt/plastic containers with lids or deli cups
5. Rubber mallet
6. Water, vinegar or Magic water
7. optional newspaper
Steps
- Take your bone dry clay and add it to the Ziploc Bag
- Cut a few thin slabs of clay off of a bag of clay and let it become bone dry
- Alternatively if you throw you can take your trimmings and put them in a bucket or container to store until you have enough
- You should also save the slip that comes off onto your hands while you are throwing and add that as well
- Use a rubber mallet to smash the clay into a powder (LEAVE the clay in the Ziploc bag) You don’t want to open the bag too soon or you could get a cloud of silica and silicosis is a real thing)
- Take your other container and add the liquid to it
- Let it sit for a few hours
- Use the immersion stick blender to break it into smaller pieces (Don’t over mix as it will tear the fibers and that’s what we want)
- Add the clay into the newspaper liquid solution
- Stir the mixture a little bit to encorporate
- leave it to sit for 15 minutes
- blend smooth
