How to make joining slip

Joining slip is an essential part of hand building. It ensures that your joins are nice and secure. Use joining slip when your two pieces are leather hard to make a firm connection.

The three liquids you can add to make your joining slip are straight water, magic water, and vinegar. Vinegar is a deflocculant and will make your clay more

Materials

  1. Clay body/trimming scraps

2. Immersion blender

3. 2 yogurt/plastic containers with lids or deli cups

4. Ziploc bag (optional)

5. Rubber mallet

6. Water, vinegar or Magic water

7. optional newspaper

Steps

  1. Take your bone dry clay and add it to the Ziploc Bag
    • Cut a few thin slabs of clay off of a bag of clay and let it become bone dry
    • Alternatively if you throw you can take your trimmings and put them in a bucket or container to store until you have enough
      • You should also save the slip that comes off onto your hands while you are throwing and add that as well
  2. Use a rubber mallet to smash the clay into a powder (LEAVE the clay in the Ziploc bag) You don’t want to open the bag too soon or you could get a cloud of silica and silicosis is a real thing)
  3. Take your other container and add the liquid to it
  4. Let it sit for a few hours
  5. Use the immersion stick blender to break it into smaller pieces (Don’t over mix as it will tear the fibers and that’s what we want)
  6. Add the clay into the newspaper liquid solution
  7. Stir the mixture a little bit to encorporate
  8. leave it to sit for 15 minutes
  9. blend smooth
