Lithium Oxide Li2O

  • Lightest, smallest, and most powerful of the fluxes
  • Fluxing action begins around 1472°F
    • less volatile than sodium oxide at higher temps
  • One of the alkali fluxes
  • Has strong color response similar to that of sodium or potassium oxides
    • however, produces different color effects
  • Brightening colors with as little as 1 percent present in the recipe
    • Can produce beautiful
      • blues with copper
      • Pinks with cobalt
  • Adding 1-2% can reduce melting temperature of glaze by one cone
  • Has low viscosity and surface tension
  • Produces soft glaze surfaces
    • strong fluxing action allows for more silica, alumina, or calcium oxide to create a stronger glaze surface
  • Encourages textured look in glazes, like mottled colors, streaks, and or color variations in thick and thin coats.
