Rutile TiO2 + FeO

  • Not a pure color oxide but rather a combination of iron and titanium dioxide
  • An opacifier
  • Melts at 3317°F
  • Can produce cream, tan, and blue colors with characteristically streaky appearance
  • Mixed with 50% Frits, rutile is often used as wash over glaze
  • Sources include ilmenite, and light or dark rutile (325 mesh).
    • Mineral ilmenite is refined to produce rutile which is then refined to produce titanium and iron
  • It is a variable material; dark forms contain more iron oxide and amounts of titanium dioxide vary.
