- Not a pure color oxide but rather a combination of iron and titanium dioxide
- An opacifier
- Melts at 3317°F
- Can produce cream, tan, and blue colors with characteristically streaky appearance
- Mixed with 50% Frits, rutile is often used as wash over glaze
- Sources include ilmenite, and light or dark rutile (325 mesh).
- Mineral ilmenite is refined to produce rutile which is then refined to produce titanium and iron
- It is a variable material; dark forms contain more iron oxide and amounts of titanium dioxide vary.
